Something To Chew On

The day that Pearl came into my life I was confused. There I was, minding my own beeswax and a guy with a trailer pulled into our backyard. I peeked into that trailer and all I saw were ears. Big, pointy, fuzzy ears. Uh-oh, what did I get myself into this time, I wondered.

Never having a donkey before, I wasn’t really sure what to do with her...so I put her in the chicken pen.

“I am NOT a chicken!” she told me as she walked right outta there taking part of the fence with her. Oh, boy...I was in for a lot more than I realized.

I threw my hands up and left her alone for awhile and when I came back Pearl was lying on her back, feet straight up in the air. I walked up to her, fully expecting that she would jump up and run off, but she didn’t. So I started scratching her belly. She really liked that.

I scratched her belly for a while and then started playing with her feet. She just laid there like a puppy.

Soon, Pearl and I were friends. She played in the yard and chased the dog around the shed. After a while she’d run the other direction and the dog would chase her around the shed. It was comical to watch a dog and donkey play together in our backyard.

Eventually, Pearl was relocated to the pasture where she met more friends.

Those relationships and the antics that ensue sparked the compilation of stories I hope to share with you. True stories, mostly, often witnessed from my back porch where we love to watch animal lives unfold as they come and go. Something we don’t take for granted, and not everyone gets to witness.

It’s a place where the wind blows, the birds sing and not much else goes on. However, those animals have busy lives and they live it out right in front of us.

Along the way I’ll introduce them to you and share their personalities as best I can. They help keep my heart light and happy; even though they are spoiled and needy and take up a bunch of my energy and time...plus they poop a lot!
